| "MARTIN LUTHER" 12-Feet Tall Grey Granite Jon has just been awarded a commission to sculpt a twelve foot stone statue of German religious reformer Martin Luther. As a priest and theological professor, Luther confronted Roman Catholic doctrine with his “Ninety-Five Theses” in 1517, resulting in his excommunication four years later. His translation of the Bible into the language of the people (instead of Latin) made it more accessible, causing a tremendous impact on the church and on German culture. The statue will commissioned by Lenoir-Rhyne University. Founded in 1891 by four Lutheran pastors, the school is a comprehensive liberal arts institution, enrolling some 1,500 students in more than 60 undergraduate degree programs and master's degree programs. Jon's sketch of the proposed piece is shown here. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
